It looks as though Instagram, one of the world’s most popular social media platforms, just banned #EDM.
Why? Well it’s not toally clear.
Instagram has banned more than 200 hashtags to help regulate its content so far, ranging from clearly explicit hashtags like #fuck and #porn, to seemingly innocent, like #curvy and #goddess, both of which became associated with sexually explicit posts that violate its community guidelines.
“We block (i.e. make unsearchable) certain hashtags when they are consistently being used to share images and videos that violate our Community Guidelines,” the rep added. “In this case, #curvy was being used to share content that violates our guidelines around nudity,” an official statement read.
However, Instagram has also banned hashtags like #iphone, #photography and ironically, #instagram. And Instagram hasn’t stated why these hashtags aren’t searchable, one conclusion seems obvious – they’re incredibly generic.
So, is that the reason behind blocking #EDM, or was it becoming something worse? you can still use hashtags like #EDMFamily, or #EDMLife…but not #EDM. If Instagram responds to requests for a statement, we’ll have our answer.
