Firefighters extinguished the brief second-alarm blaze that torched poolside palm trees and cabanas at what appears to be the luxury resort’s Bamboo Pool.
Clark County Fire Department officials confirmed that one person was taken to a local hospital.
The fire quickly spread to the trees amid dry and nearly 100 degree conditions that have settled over Las Vegas, but fire officials say the flames did “very little” damage to the building.
The fire sent lounging guests running from the pool with employees believing it may have been sparked by a discarded cigarette, a witness told the Las Vegas Sun.
Cosmopolitan management acknowledged the fire and said no one was seriously injured.
“The cause of the fire is still under investigation,” management said in a statement. “Guests were alerted to the situation by our team of safety professionals and our comprehensive emergency responsive program, and proper evacuation procedures were used. At The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas the safety and security of our guests and CoStars is our first priority.”
Black smoke pouring out of the fire was seen for miles from the Las Vegas Strip. A video of the fire shows some guests at the hotel standing and watching the blaze on the opposite end of the pool area from the fire.
