Ark Theory & Laura Leighe – Behind The Music

Ark Theory & Laura Leighe – Behind The Music
Tomas Serrano

Ark Theory and Laura Leighe made their debut to the EDM scene with a brand new single entitled “Never Gonna Leave”, released on Hinky Records January 11th 2019. The track is a perfect blend of both artist’s respective styles, combining a stunning vocal performance by Laura Leighe with a moving composition by Ark Theory. A true work of art, the track consists of classic orchestral elements, ethereal pads and melodies, and a drop carried by huge stacked synth chords akin to artists such as Illenium, Said The Sky, and Seven Lions. “Never Gonna Leave” is sure to find its way to the playlists of EDM enthusiasts as well as more pop oriented listeners, and we don’t see it going anywhere any time soon.

Tell us a little bit about how the two of you were introduced.

Ark Theory: Laura and I were introduced through our mutual management Timelapse Music Group. We met at a “Control” event at the Avalon nightclub in Los Angeles where we were both out
supporting a fellow artist.

Laura Leighe: We were introduced by our management last summer at The Avalon, Hollywood. You can’t tell through the mask, but I could immediately see that he’s the nicest, coolest person… crazy talented and hard-working, while also being such a gentleman in a world where there aren’t many anymore, lol.

When the two of you met did you know right away that you were going to want to do a song together or did that come organically at a later date?

Ark Theory: Not right away, no. After Laura and I had met my manager was showing me some of the songs that she had written and some of the work that she had done prior. The Lyrics to Never Gonna Leave came up and it just resonated with me, thats when I knew we had the opportunity to make something special together.

Laura Leighe: After discussing our genres and influences, realized we differ in musical taste on the extreme ends of our style spectrums. Yet definitely overlap in the middle, agreeing on some of our favorite artists. So, when our management asked if we’d be interested in collaborating later in the fall, we both said yes!

What did the two of you draw Inspiration from for the song?

Ark Theory: I’ve always been influenced by film scorers like Hanz Zimmer and Christopher Tin, which I feel is apparent in this track as well as a few other things I have in the works. I always tend to reach for orchestral instruments for the breakdowns and intro’s which adds to the cinematic-ness of the song and brings a good contrast to the electronic elements that are more present during the drop.

Laura Leighe: After learning a lot of hard life and business lessons in the LA music industry, I wrote “Never Gonna Leave” as a song to declare that none of this drama is gonna break me…all I can do is live in the now, put out the music that’s in my heart, and never quit…it’s the only way that truly inspired art containing the kind of passion required to touch hearts and change minds and lives is made. On my journey, I’ve learned that successful people are people of action…they don’t get tripped up on the what if’s and past failures…they just make the best possible choice for their lives right now, and if it doesn’t work, c’est la vie! …cross it off the list and move on. With that attitude, we are constantly growing, and getting better, so nothing will stop us.

That’s awesome to hear. I understand this is your first label release. How does that feel?

Ark Theory: It is, this is the first Label release under the “Ark Theory” project. Ark Theory is a project that I’ve been working on the down low for some time now so its of course extremely exciting to finally get some music out under the new name. I couldn’t have asked for a better artist to work with for a debut track under the new name.

Laura Leighe: It feels fantastic! Since I first moved to LA in 2009, I’ve been so thankful for the opportunity to have released 3 EPs, several singles, and a full length album independently, which have helped me get to this milestone. To now have the support of a team and a label who truly believe in the song, while also having the reach required to give it wings is really exciting. The sky’s the limit!

When can we expect new music from the two of you?

Ark Theory: At the moment Laura and I are both working on some individual projects of our own so we can’t say just yet. But Laura is such a talented artist that I don’t expect it to be too long before we get to work on something new together.

Laura Leighe: I’m constantly writing and recording new songs for both my solo project and collaborations which are set to be released this spring. Stay tuned for official drop dates!

We have to ask. Who’s under the mask? There’s been some rumors going around that your an already well established artist under a new alias.

Ark Theory: At the moment I’m not really at liberty to say. I chose to present this hooded figure for Ark Theory in order separate this project from some of my other artist projects and give it a chance to stand on it’s own two feet before it gets tied to previous work of mine. I don’t intend for Ark Theory to be faceless forever, but for now it will just have to keep some of the mystery behind it.
