This Sunday millions of music lovers will tune in to the 54th Grammy Awards, with Grammy host LL Cool J playing master of ceremonies for the evening. As is the case every year, the night will feature a slew of performances from both Grammy nominees and special guests. Confirmed performances include a rare appearance of the surviving members of The Beach Boys, as well as performances from Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift, and a duet between Coldplay and Rihanna. But while many of these performances will register as per usual for many Grammy watchers, the Recording Academy just announced that there will be a special “tribute to electronic music” performance outside of the Staples Center from The Foo Fighters, David Guetta, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, and Deadmau5.

Deadmau5 – “Raise Your Weapon” (nominated for “Best Dance Recording”)

In the weeks leading up to the Grammys some New Yorkers may have noticed the award show’s advertising strewn about the city, the most prominent of which is a poster of the half-shaven, futuristic-looking producer Skrillex (see above.) Nominated for 5 Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist, Skrillex has amassed more Grammy Award nominations than any electronic musician in history. Though Skrillex isn’t listed as performing in the “tribute to electronic music,” it wouldn’t be surprising if Skrillex appears for his own surprise performance some time during Sunday’s show.

Skrillex – “Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites” (nominated for “Best Dance Recording”)

Not only does Skrillex figure prominently at the Grammys this year, he graced the cover of Billboard magazine this month standing alongside A-Trak and Diplo, with the headline “Dance Dance Evolution: Winning At Live, Leading At A&R, Ready For Mainstream Global Domination.” And in other news, Simon Cowell announced his new DJ talent show that he’s producing alongside Will Smith (more on that from Dubspot later), all of this pointing to the fact that the recording industry is catching on to the rapidly increasing presence of electronic musicians in America.

Duck Sauce – “Barbara Streisand”(nominated for “Best Dance Recording”)

As many electronic music fans may know, the ebb and flow of electronic music in the pop realm seems to come as quickly as it goes, and the Grammys have been notoriously late on many things, most of all electronic music. It wasn’t until 2005 that the Recording Academy even created a Best Dance/Electronica Album category, and in 2 of those years the winners were Lady Gaga and Madonna. The year the category debuted seemed like the most sincere effort at representing the genre with nominations going to Basement Jaxx, The Crystal Method, Paul Oakenfold, The Prodigy, and Paul Van Dyke. Basement Jaxx won that year for Kish Kash, a well-deserved win for an album that will remain a classic for years to come. In other years winners include Daft Punk’s Alive 2007, a live album and possible retribution for missing Daft Punk classics pre-2005, La Roux’s self-titled debut, and 2 wins from The Chemical Brothers for We Are the Night and Push the Button.

David Guetta & Avicii – “Sunshine” (nominated for “Best Dance Recording”) This year the Best Dance/Electronica Album category features nominations for Skrillex, Deadmau5, David Guetta, Cut/Copy, and Robyn. Filled with a more straight-forward representation of the genre than in years past, it remains concerning that an artist like Robyn will likely never share a “Best Pop Album” category with the likes of Madonna and Gaga, despite the Swedish singer’s inarguable pop mastery. That said, this year’s electronic-dominated Grammys and the music industry news surrounding it points to the age-old question, what is pop? If a non-singing dubstep producer like Skrillex can share the Best New Artists category alongside Nicki Minaj and J. Cole, will drops be the new hooks? What is electronic music’s place in pop to you? Who would you have nominated in the Best Dance/Electronica category?

For 2012. From across the electronic dance spectrum comes thermic audio from the likes of KhoMha, Mr Pit, Basil O’Glue, Rex Mundi, Elevation vs. Grube & Hovsepian and many others.
It also features, exclusively, ‘Bolandish’- Markus’ incredible new track.

(Released thru Armada Music, 17th February 2012)

“Schulz clearly demonstrates his native understanding of the floor-attacking, uncompromising trance that holds sway over LA’s clubs and arenas – Album of the Month” – Mixmag

Watch the pre-order trailer here: XXX

During the last weeks of 2011, via a dedicated video-cast, Markus Schulz revealed that the setting for his 2012 City compilation would be the sprawling electronic dancetropolis of Los Angeles.

On making the announcement, Markus said: “electronic dance music has blown up huge in the United States this past 12 months. One of the main reasons driving that is the scene in Los Angeles, where a new generation of clubbers are uniting with long-term fans and creating one of the most passionate scenes anywhere on the globe. I’ve played there many times in my career, at the Monster Massive festivals, the Electric Daisy Carnivals and 3 years New Years Eves at Together As One, and they’ve all been so memorable in their own way!”

Following the broadcast Markus began his musical mission to embody the dance-heart of one of the biggest cities on the planet and build a mix testament to it.

As is now the City series’ custom path, ‘LA ’12’ discs are opened by Markus himself, who infuses each mix with an atmospherically charged overture. Under his San Andreas Soundlab alias, ‘Hollywood Boulevard’ teleports the listener straight down into the early evening thrive of the iconic Tinsel-town sidewalk. As the sun starts to set, the rush of the passing traffic melts into long expectant synth sweeps, which, beat-free, beautifully capture the palpable anticipatory buzz of a long LA night ahead.

Danilo Ercole and Wellenrausch soundtrack this day-to-night transformation with their newest studio wares, ‘A Man With Two Names’ and ‘Million Miles To Run’. Pushing ‘LA’12’ further down this potent, progressive freeway, the swirling strains of Nifra ‘Dark Harbour’ and the epically spacious ‘Hyperfocus’ from Mark Otten intoxicate the mix and ratchet its tension. As the tougher sounds begin to filter their way in with ever-greater frequency, so the clubbers pulse quickens. The auditory punch of Beat Service’s ‘Fortuna’ produces a knockout moment, as does the unrestricted uprush of Styller’s striking ‘Quantum Mechanics’. Pushing Mix #1’s mercury conclusively through the roof is the rolling thunder of ‘Bolandish’ – Markus’ latest atom-splitter.

For just a moment disc 2 drops the drums out with the evocative, echoic 911 wail of ‘Avalon’. Markus’ tribute to the famed Hollywood club, the track plants you right outside its front door. One final glance back up at Capitol Records, etched against LA’s night-black cityscape, and the whooping rush of Arnej’s ‘We Unite’ sucks you into Avalon. From there ‘LA’12’ wholeheartedly and vociferously seizes control of your arms and feet. Through the concussive beats, shock-waving synths and digital discordance of tracks like, Elevation vs. Grube & Hovsepian ‘City of Angels’, KhoMha’s ‘Artemis’, Aaron Camz ‘Aqwa’ and Mr Pit’s purpose built outro mix of ‘River of Hearts’, it delivers LA’s pitch-perfect audio expo.

If you’ve not clubbed the city before, this compilation will all-but secure the credentials for you. Capturing the pumped fission and pure passion that put Angelenos’ feet on the floor all-year-round, it makes a compelling a case for the city’s accession to nu electronic dance capital.

Markus Schulz – Los Angeles ’12 is out on Feb 17th 2012. The download version is available to pre-order through iTunes now thru this link http://bit.ly/zyxJ3g and the CD can be purchased from Armada’s online store here: http://bit.ly/yUIzrb

The LA’12 Launch Gigs: To mark the release of Markus’ 2012 city-comp, he’ll be taking its music to the legendary LA club, to give clubbers the full, unforgettable and LIVE Los Angeles ’12 experience! On Presidents Day weekend in the US, it’ll be the Hollywood club that will play host to two very special parties to celebrate the release of Los Angeles ’12. Saturday February 18th is a 21+ event (pre-sales now sold out) with Sunday the 19th being a 18s and over show. Markus says: “It’s going to be extended sets from me alongside some very special guests and it’ll be the first time in my career that I’ve done two back-to-back shows in LA”. “So get your plane tickets, booked, your hotel rooms reserved and your plans made – it’s going to be an incredible weekend!”

About the RE:GENERATION MUSIC PROJECT:

The RE:GENERATION MUSIC PROJECT examines the history of different music through the eyes of five of the most influential electronic producer/DJ’s in music today. For the project, Mark Ronson, DJ Premier, The Crystal Method, Pretty Lights and Skrillex each take a specific musical style and explore it by writing and recording a brand new track with a grouping of influential collaborators in that genre. The entire experience comes to life in the RE:GENERATION feature documentary directed by award-winning documentarian Amir Bar-Lev (“MY KID COULD PAINT THAT,” “THE TILLMAN STORY”).

In the film, current five-time GRAMMY®-nominated artist Skrillex heads into a Los Angeles studio with members of the iconic rock band The Doors to collaborate on a new song, “Breakn’ A Sweat.” Meanwhile, The Crystal Method touched down in Detroit to work with Martha Reeves of The Vandellas and The Funk Brothers on the R&B number “I’m Not Leaving.” Mark Ronson created a southern brew of New Orleans jazz in “A La Modeliste” that boasts a veritable all-star cast of Erykah Badu, Trombone Shorty, Mos Def, Zigaboo Modeliste and Members of The Dap Kings. DJ Premier tapped NAS and Boston’s very own Berklee Symphony Orchestra for his “Regeneration,” and the documentary culminates in Nashville on the dusty intergalactic twang of Pretty Lights‘ “Wayfaring Stranger” featuring vocals from LeAnn Rimes and Dr. Ralph Stanley. RE:GENERATION will enjoy a unique nationwide, one-night only theatrical release in select cities and venues on February 16, 2012, with encore screenings to be scheduled for February 23. For ticket and theater information log on to www.regenerationmusicproject.com or www.facebook.com/regenerationmusicproject.

In 2006, trance heads from all around the world collectively rejoiced to the arrival of a fresh creative producer from the Netherlands. Sander Ketelaars aka: Sander Van Doorn has been a natural chart-topper from the very beginning, constantly bringing a unique sound that has consistently caught the attention of not only his growing number of dedicated fans, but also big name artists such as: Pete Tong, Judge Jules, Tiesto, and Carl Cox.

With his record breaking rise to fame within less than 5 years (Starting in 2006 at #32 on the Dj Mag top 100 Djs list, and then quickly rising to #10 in just 3 years in 2009), Sander has released 2 ear smashing albums (Supernatralistic – 2008, Dusk Till Doorn 2 CD Compilation – 2010) both of which contained multiple tracks that reached the top of the trance charts on Beatport.

Also no rookie when it comes to awards, Sander continued on to win the ‘Best New Producer’ award at the Trance Awards in 2006, and the ‘Best Breakthrough DJ’ as well as a nomination for ‘Best Underground Track’ for his creation “Riff” at the International Dance Music Awards held at the Miami WMC (Winter Music Conference) in 2008. He even launched his very own podcast in which plays on XM satellite radio every Saturday called “Identity Radio” that is still going strong and on its 93rd episode after over 3 years of broadcast. Everything that this young producer/dj touches seems to effortlessly turn into gold, and honestly it does not seem like he is anywhere near slowing down.

Every year that passes brings more and more accomplishments, and 2011 was no exception to another year where Sander continues to rise to the top. Playing all over the world, he landed several headlining high-profile gigs such as (but not excluding to): the Sensation Festivals, Trance Energy, Mysteryland, and even Electric Daisy Carnival. On September 19, 2011 Sander also dropped a brand new 11 track album, cleverly named “Eleve11” (eleven tracks, and released in 2011) and if it is to be anything like his previous albums it is sure to be nothing short of amazing. As he continues to produce everything from genre-crossing breakdowns, to uplifting skin-tingling synth riffs, Sander’s originality is still catching the eye of thousands and he never fails to keep his listeners on their toes. While he constantly pumps out hit after hit, and sells out tour after tour one must wonder how Sander finds time to live a normal life.

After all, traveling through several countries within just a few weeks, creating remixes and new tracks every month, AND running a weekly radio show/podcast, can get tiring for anyone. Toughing it out through his ever-growing busy schedule this rising star does it all with full passion and ease, all while miraculously managing to stay normal, and completely down to earth.

Many view the International Dj to have an image similar to the whole “Sex, Drugs, and Rock n’ Roll” (or in this case Sex, Drugs, and Dance Music) with a personality revolving around egos, record sales, as well as eating, drinking, and sleeping: PARTY.

It is extremely refreshing to learn that not every celebrity Dj falls into this stereotype, and while the world is constantly moving past them they remain in place, with their morals and head fastened tightly: ON. We took some time to slow it down with one of our favorite trance Djs to ask him a few questions about his inner ‘normal’ self, as from the outside there is clearly nothing normal about his crazy and fast-paced life. We were pleasantly surprised to find that Sander still sees “A home cooked meal with the family” as his favorite place to eat, is “Learning how to snowboard, and interested in wine and working on my collection!” and still feels “Going home is like a holiday” even after being to several countries all over the world. When we asked him what he likes to do when he goes out with friends he responded with “Sometimes we will go to a club, but I prefer to have friends over so I can really enjoy the time with them and relax.” Sander is a true example of a superstar Dj “Keepin’ it real”, and we are absolutely in love with it.

Not everyone knows the real story of how someone rose to fame, and it is very rare to see someone famous remember and acknowledge their roots. After all, everyone starts somewhere and it is really a sad sight to see when someone leaves their past behind. Everything/everyone that we have done/met in the past has led us all to this point in our lives, and it is hard to find someone who sees their past in that way.

When we asked Sander to dig deep into his roots and tell us how he initially got into electronic dance music, he responded “It all started with just going out with friends. I began to hear the music out. I started to listen to Dj’s like Marco V, and I really just loved the energy and the vibe of the whole scene. I mean, who wouldn’t?” We couldn’t agree more. Who wouldn’t love the vibe of togetherness and peace, all dancing under one beat? It is surprising to know that the same feeling that has captured us into loving this music scene was the same feeling that lured Sander Van Doorn into doing what he does! We were curious as to where he began his music career and we were surprised when he told us “I worked in a bar in my hometown many years ago. I started spinning after the place closed and the staff was cleaning. It didn’t take long before they asked me to spin for a crowd.”

Who would have known that our very own Sander Van Doorn began his Dj career almost by accident! Then we wondered, what would our beloved Sander be doing if he never found dance music? Where would he be today? When we asked him he told us “Before I was producing/DJ’ing I was working in my brother’s aluminum fabrication shop. Very boring! I was also going to school for business and marketing. I guess if I had continued with that I would be working in that field doing presentations on Monday morning!” Can you imagine a world without Sander Van Doorn?

Everyone has favorite things, but when it’s someone who travels the world, performs for thousands of people, and has music that is known internationally, are their favorite things the same? We asked Sander what a few of his ‘Favorite Things’ were cause we were sure you’d like to know….and we’re not going to lie, we were dying to know as well!

With the dust barely settling on SOFI’s explosive LOCKED & LOADED EP PT.1, SOFI has some unfinished business to handle.

On “Bring The Devil,” she finds the perfect production to suit her emotive vocals. The powerful growling bass and lurching drums pierce through the bed of subtly euphoric pads that the track is built upon with SOFI’s beautifully delivered vocals acting as the perfect counterpoint. The exclusive Beatport edition is accompanied by the a cappella for this track, giving producers and DJs the chance to get creative with it.

The EP also features the track “Again Sometime,” this time with SOFI teaming up with red-hot Dutch production trio Noisia to vocalize the gargantuan “Tommy’s Theme.” As SOFI’s vocals usher in the track, drifting through the cinematic landscape of lush strings and stumbling drums, the song builds to a release. Finally letting go, deadly bass swipes swing through the track, elastic synths mutate and the drums bump with SOFI winding her vocals through the track expertly.

BBC Radio 1′s Judge Jules is swapping his headphones and decks for a wig and gown as he launches his new legal career.
Judge Jules has hosted a Radio 1 show for 14 years, but he is being shifted out of the schedule alongside veteran DJ Gilles Peterson as the radio station looks for younger talent.

The DJ told his fans: “I’m going to continue DJ-ing and I’m having a bit of a career change – I’m off to become an entertainment lawyer at Sheridans.”
A legal career is not as bizarre as it sounds though.

Judge Jules, whose real name is Julius O’Riordan, studied law at the London School of Economics, where he started out DJing for fun before turning professional.

The BBC announced the high profile departures on Wednesday. It has been the first major decision from new Radio 1 controller Ben Cooper.

The new line-up will include cult dance DJs Skream & Benga and Toddla T. There will also be a new show from April – BBC Radio 1 Residency.
