Watch house music makes its first television news appearance in 1986

In the throwback news video above, ABC7 Chicago reporter, Jay Levine, makes history by covering house music on television news for the first time in Chicago in 1986. The feature delves into the origins of the genre beginning with anchor Joan Esposito’s intro: “So called ‘house music’ was first made in the creator’s houses, but was also performed at clubs called the warehouse and powerhouse.” Chicago house pioneers Steve “Silk” Hurly and Farley “Jackmaster” Funk appear in their first on-camera interviews demonstrating to the reporter how to compose a house track beginning with “a heavy beat.”

Considering the hefty price tags in-demand DJs command today, Levine concludes the news package with a now 30-year-old prediction about the genre’s economics saying, “If it takes off like many believe it will, those thousand dollar advances they’ve been getting may soon seem like peanuts.”
