Before social media, Dj’s use to advertise themselves with trading cards.

These might well be the best pack of cards we’ve ever seen. A series of DJ trading cards, complete with stats like average BPM, total remixes and record collection size, resurrected by the internet in all their 90s glory. Pinch yourself all you like – these are real, they’re amazing and you can stare at them below.

Unearthed by Pulse Radio, the series of 14 “trading cards” were, according to veteran hero Mr. C, issued in 1996 by German label Studio !K7 as an accompaniment to his mix CD X-Mix: The Electronic Storm. Mr. C himself plus friends like Carl Craig, Richie Hawtin, Derrick May, Carl Cox and Paul van Dyk are among the legends immortalised by the cards, which come complete with tidbits like the DJ-in-question’s longest ever set and number of 12” releases, alongside their almost uniform preference for 130 BPMs.

If you’re in the mood for another nostalgia trip, go ahead and relive the results from DJ Mag’s first ever Top 100 DJs poll from way back in 1993. As UK producer Bodyjack paints it: “Imagine a more innocent time, before the rise of super clubs and superstar DJs in the late 90s, when the only genres in the magazines were simply house & garage, techno, ragga (!), and hip-hop; when jungle/drum & bass was in its infancy, born out of a rave scene which itself had just gone “happy hardcore”…and no one had heard of a CDJ, let alone an mp3.”
