Embarking on a voyage with a final destination to Ensenada, Mexico, 2,500 wild and free souls embodied a state of limitless standards and outlandish behavior. With nearly 72 hours of non-stop musical programming and entertainment, the constant notion of happiness and freedom was as addictive as the broad styles of dance moves seen from sunrise to sunset.
The uniqueness of the “boat” party encourages artists to step outside of their comfort zone with plenty of surprise sets in unannounced locations like a hidden pent house or at the closing of the event on the mini-golf course. Some of my stand out sets of the weekend included Convex’s first time performing on board with 2 sets, fresh off performing at EDC Las Vegas and Nocturnal Wonderland as well as Bonnie x Clyde’s champagne popping, energy filled set.
Thomas Jack, typically known for his tropical house vibes, took the dance floor on a trip of hard pumpin tech vibes infused with acid house stompers during his 5+ hour set. Fresh off the first ever Goldie Awards (a new DJ and beat battle competition produced by A-Trak) MSCLS delivered with plenty of his original tracks that have him on a hot streak of gigs and releases.
The Dancetronauts continued their surprising sets filled elaborate performances, this time bringing on board 60 of their Dancetrohotties troop, as well as popping 200 bottles of champagne during their pool time set. The Green Velvet & Doc Martin tag team set in Ensenada was the cherry on top of the beautiful setting at the private clifftop estate party at Casa de los Siete Patios.
A Groove Cruise must and attainable through proper disco nap scheduling, the Incorrect show case featuring Anthony Attalla and friends went from moon light to sunrise welcoming the morning with beautiful house music beats while in the middle of the ocean.
With plenty activities on board like interactive experiences where dance music fans get the rare opportunity of going on excursions with their favorite artists, the Whet Oasis (presented the Zen Den) produced by the Tranquility Tribe, created a space offering a variety of workshops, yoga sessions, a meditation center and more resources for those that wanted to step into a place of relaxation. Wether you needed a place to step away from the music or needed a recharge or wanted to try one of the various healing elements available. For those keen to the comedy stylings of ‘DJ’ Mimosa there was a special full comedy performance scheduled if you didn’t get enough of the wake up intercom comedy skit.
Neon Owl’s Elaine Huang made it on for her 3rd Groove Cruise experience in a row with a purpose to make attendees and artists aware of the causes that her organization advocates for. “During my first cruise last October, we ended meeting and signing Feenixpawl to work with us on our Dance. Give. Inspire. charity line to help build wells for clean water in developing countries. That collab finally launched this month on Neon Owl’s website. On the second cruise back in January, we met ARTY on for the first time, who ended up on our charity line for the third cruise last week! From last week, we will be getting the ball rolling with Bonnie X Clyde and Autograf. Aside from that, the team for the Whet Foundation volunteer trips keeps getting bigger and bigger! This year we brought out 10 of our own team members along with Arty, Convex, Lavelle, and Mahalo to support the kids. It was magical and shows that we can absolutely party while supporting amazing causes at the same time. I know it must have been rough for the artists since the music didn’t stop till 8:00am and the volunteer trip was at 8:30am, haha! The important thing is that they made it out and it will just keep getting bigger and bigger. We are all super fortunate to be partying on a boat with unlimited food, fun, and good vibes. A little goes a long way for these kids that come from such tough backgrounds, so my vision is that for the next cruise and each one after that, we double up on donations, volunteers, impact, and reach.”
Part of the magic of the Groove Cruise is the wide range of people that attend the event. While venturing from one side of the pool to sitting at the food court you will see amazing costumes and true to theme outfits to many respectable artists on board for the ride. When speaking to Whet Travel’s founder, Jason Beukema, he told us his proudest moment since the first Cruise was seeing how far the brand has been able to spread, and the unity that it has created amongst attendees. While on the dance floor we even ran into industry heads like like infamous producer/composer Sidney Swift , Elle Vee (Billboard charting singer of Bomb’s Away ‘Like You’), Kaleena Zanders (Singer of hits like SNBRN’s ‘California’) and many more.
Have you ever wondered if there could potentially be new Groove Cruises over seas on the horizon? Whet Travel founder Jason Beukema hinted at such a possibility with various locations on their mind!
